This should be fun ... I've become a BzzAgent!

With word of mouth marketing breaking into the UK I thought it would be fun to get in at the bottom and see what it's all about.

So, today I became a BzzAgent. It wasn't JUST the promise of free stuff that made me do it (honest!) but the thought of getting a handle on the way the world of marketing is heading.

Anyway, if you want to learn a bit more, head over to the BzzAgent website and check it out.

Turning the tables on Telemarketers

Hopefully you haver already registered with the Telephone Preference Service to stop being inundated with calls just as you are sitting down in the evening, but if you find that a few companies still get through here are two little things that you can do about it!

The first: Three Little Words That Work!!

And those three little words: "Hold On, Please..."

Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear BT's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset .... you have efficiently completed your task.

These three little words could help eliminate telephone soliciting. They will certainly stop that caller from trying again!

The second: Tackling ghost calls...

Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is then used to determine the best time of day for a "real" salesperson to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering: If you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialled the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer!!!

World Cup - What World Cup?

For 30 days much of the planet will be glued to radios and TV’s as a festival of football unites diverse people from Angola to Australia and from Sweden to Saudi Arabia.

But how do you choose who to cheer for when your own team isn’t playing (or if they didn’t qualify)? What about the coolest flag design (probably Brazil)? Maybe the best holiday destination or food (got to be Italy)

Who Should I Cheer For banner

Many people will cheer for the underdog - Togo has never qualified before - or because the team contain players from their club team. Or perhaps you go for more political criteria, perhaps by not supporting countries involved in the war in Iraq or with a bad human rights record?

How about supporting the team that gives the most aid to poor countries? Perhaps cheering on the country that spends the most on healthcare? Or booing the country that spends the most on weapons?

It's food for thought .....

Yet another Labour stealth tax? A Bed Tax!!

Saw this is the latest Travelodge promo email and, while it does help create a level of publicity for themselves, I am more than happy to support the cause:

Lie down and be counted - say 'NO' to Bed Tax!

A 'Bed Tax' that could raise the cost of your UK break by up to £100 per family, is being proposed as part of a Government tax review. This 10% tax (per night) added to the current 17.5% VAT means that this country would be the highest taxed holiday destination in Europe. Travelodge is campaigning to bring prices down and believes that this latest tax is yet another blow for all UK holiday makers.

Please join us in voicing opposition to this latest stealth tax by emailing us at notobedtax@travelodge.co.uk. Start your message 'notobedtax' and include your full name. Tell your friends - lie down and be counted - say NO to bed tax!

Changing Lives Cards

A new endeavour that I have come in contact with (and am now really happy to help out with on a technical level) that actually makes a difference in this world on an individual level is Changing Lives Cards.

If you were to look upon them as a Hand-made Greeting Card manufacturer they would be exemplary. The quality of the cards is absolutely superb (my print background gives me the right to judge in that way I believe), the price is amazingly low for the product, but that 100% of all profits goes to the individuals whose lives are helped makes this stand out from the crowd by a long shot.

My recommendation: If you live in London and would like to help this project, get in touch with them today. They can organise a coffee afternoon / evening with you and your friends and together you can make a difference.

Buy a card - change a life!

More assistance in the petrol price squeeze

To follow on from my previous post here is other site which promises great things.

If this site can deliver what it promises, cheaper fuel should be available to all.

Using the simple principle of bulk buying they are attempting to create a consumer group based around PipelineCard.org

They say "We are currently negotiating with a major national fuel retailer so we expect to be able to offer cheaper petrol and diesel in most parts of the UK."
